Do Breast Implants Interfere with Mammograms?
The potential for breast implants to interfere with mammogram screenings is a common concern among women considering breast augmentation. While it is true that viewing breast tissues during a traditional mammogram can be a bit more challenging when implants are present, there are certain techniques that can be employed to help deliver more precise and conclusive mammography results.
One method that can be used to improve the accuracy of mammograms when breast implants are positioned underneath the chest muscle is known as “implant displacement.” With this technique, the radiologist conducting the mammogram screening pushes the implant back along the chest wall while pulling the breast tissue forward. By doing so, four specialized images can be taken in addition to the four normal x-rays, enabling the radiologist to capture a more comprehensive view of breast tissues.
For cases in which the implant displacement approach (or any other methods) can’t provide an adequate mammogram reading, an MRI can usually be performed instead. This technique can allow the radiologist performing the screening to obtain an enhanced view of breast tissues when implants are significantly obstructing mammography results.
Since an alternative approach to imaging may be necessary, it is important for anyone who has breast implants to mention this when scheduling a mammography appointment. Doing so will help the radiologist and his or her staff better prepare for the mammogram, ultimately increasing the probability of getting the most accurate results possible.
