How to Detect a Breast Implant Rupture
The breast implant design and manufacturing process has seen a great many advances over the years. Many of today’s breast implants are exceptionally durable while enabling women to achieve breast augmentation results that look beautiful and natural. With that in mind, it is very important to remember that breast implants are not lifetime devices, and their outer shells are not completely impervious. Breast implants can rupture, particularly if they are older implants. They are susceptible to “wear” over time, which can increase the chance that they may rupture after a certain number of years. While our plastic surgeon, Daniel C. Mills, MD, FACS, advises patients that the implants should last approximately 10 years (which is the typical amount of time covered under warranty by many implant manufacturers), he has also seen some cases of small, “silent ruptures” earlier than that. Even if the breast implants are relatively new, a rupture is still possible, so patients should always be aware of that possibility and know their options regarding the available methods for examination and detection of breast implant ruptures.
There are several ways that women can determine whether a breast implant has ruptured. One of the least invasive and most advanced diagnostic options is available right here at Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute. Dr. Mills has been utilizing high-definition ultrasound imaging tests to detect breast implant ruptures for many years and has found it to be a quick and precise method of identifying ruptures regardless of their size. This technology can be very helpful for women who suspect that they may have an implant rupture, as well as for general evaluation of the current state of the breast implants. You can view a video presentation of the ultrasound procedure and see examples of the images here.
Mammograms and MRIs (magnetic resonance imaging scans) are other diagnostic methods that are capable of identifying a breast implant rupture. Physician exams and routine self-examinations can also be helpful for determining whether something may be wrong with the breast implants; however, ruptures can sometimes be very small and/or they may not produce overt signs or symptoms. This is why it is important to be aware of techniques such as high-definition ultrasound and other imaging technologies that can pinpoint potential irregularities in the implants. If a breast implant rupture is found, a breast implant exchange procedure can be performed to replace the implants with upgraded models. The implants can also be removed without replacement in accordance with individual desires.
