Why Do Breasts Sag?
One of the most common concerns among women who seek breast enhancement from our board-certified plastic surgeon is that they feel their breasts have taken on a sagging or “drooping” appearance over time. This is called breast ptosis, and it is a condition that will affect most women at some point during their lifetime. There can be many reasons why breasts sag. The natural aging process, pregnancy, fluctuations in weight, environmental factors, smoking, and even heredity can play a part. Due to one or a combination of these factors, the breasts can become stretched, the skin’s collagen and elastin can deplete, and volume can be lost, ultimately leading to some degree of breast sag and the feeling that the breasts have lost their youthful firmness and projection.
Fortunately there are things you can do to limit the potential effects of breast ptosis. While the condition may be inevitable due to factors that are beyond your control, you may be able to slow down the progression of breast ptosis somewhat by wearing supportive bras as much as possible, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, avoiding smoking, refraining from using a tanning bed, keeping weight fluctuations to a minimum, and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise regimen.
If you are looking for options to address current signs of breast droop, Dr. Daniel C. Mills offers a vast selection of surgical breast procedures that may be ideal. Breast lift surgery is specifically designed to improve signs of breast ptosis by eliminating excess, sagging skin and lifting the breasts to a higher position to produce firmer skin and a “perky” appearance. For women who have lost a significant amount of breast volume and are experiencing breast ptosis, breast lift and augmentation can address both of these concerns. In some cases, women who suffer from overly large breasts and undergo a breast reduction can achieve a “lifting” effect from that procedure, as well.
