Will Implants Help With Breast Sag?

The modern breast implant is highly versatile, and patients can choose from a variety of materials, shapes, and sizes. When placed by a qualified provider, top-quality implants can replenish volume in the bustline for a fuller and more shapely effect. In Dr. Mills’ experience, breast augmentation patients often wonder whether implants can also combat breast sagging. Known in the medical world as “ptosis,” breast sag occurs when Cooper’s ligaments – or fibrous tissue in the breasts – lose integrity and fail to maintain the support they once provided.* This can happen as a result of age, gravity, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and breastfeeding.

According to Dr. Mills, the answer to this question depends on the patient’s unique case. Breast augmentation surgery can sometimes produce a “lift;” however, for those with moderate to severe sagging, implants alone may not be sufficient. These patients may be candidates for an augmentation-mastopexy, which combines breast augmentation techniques with breast lift surgery (or “mastopexy”). This innovative procedure can not only add volume to the breasts, but it can also remove excess skin and tighten the surrounding tissue for a more “lifted” and youthful contour. To reduce the risk of bacterial contamination from the breast tissue, Dr. Mills prefers to keep the two planes separated during augmentation-mastopexy procedures.

Recently, patients may have come across the term “waterfall effect” on social media. This symptom is characterized by natural breast tissue sagging over a stationary implant due to skin laxity or insufficient tissue support. Please rest assured that like other potential complications, Dr. Mills takes every precaution to avoid the “waterfall effect” and produce results that flatter the patient’s natural build.
