Will Pregnancy Affect My Breast Implants?
Patients interested in breast augmentation often wonder whether a future pregnancy will affect their breast implants. Before answering this question, Dr. Dan Mills always mentions that because pregnancy and breastfeeding have a unique effect on every woman’s body, it’s virtually impossible to predict the changes that will occur. Everyone is different!
With this in mind, the appearance, structure, and durability of breast implants are typically not disrupted by pregnancy and breastfeeding, even when hormones take their toll on the body. Interestingly, some of Dr. Mills’ patients have said they liked the way their implants looked after pregnancy, as the stretching of the breast skin can create an even more natural-looking effect. Implants can also help prevent the volume loss often associated with pregnancy – an advantage many women who have had breast augmentation appreciate.
Moreover, it’s common for the breasts to develop some degree of ptosis (drooping) and/or skin laxity during pregnancy. This happens when the fibrous tissue in the breasts, medically known as Cooper’s ligaments, lose integrity. In such cases, a breast lift and/or larger implants may be needed to restore the pre-pregnancy bustline.
