How Can I Maximize Fat Survival After Fat Transfer?
Fat transfer, also known as “fat grafting” or “fat injections,” is a versatile technique often incorporated into cosmetic procedures. Performed with the intention of adding or replenishing natural-looking volume, the procedure involves the removal of excess fat with liposuction and the subsequent re-injection of the same fat into the treatment area. In the hands of a qualified provider, fat transfer can add a subtle yet noticeable augmentation to various areas of the body, such as in a facial fat transfer surgery or a natural breast augmentation. The method also includes the benefit of fat removal in an area of the patient’s choice (frequently the hips, thighs, or flanks).
Unfortunately, following a fat transfer procedure, it’s common for many of the transferred fat cells to be reabsorbed by the body.* As such, our Orange County plastic surgeon, Daniel C. Mills, MD, FACS, recommends patients include these habits in their recovery to potentially maximize fat survival:
- Consider hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). Many professionals advise patients to seek hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBO, after a fat transfer. Often used to facilitate wound healing, this therapy involves the infusion of tissue with extra oxygen, which can encourage the transferred cells to remain healthy and in place.*
- Adjust your sleeping position. Sleeping on the treated area can cause reabsorption and possibly mar the results of surgery. For this reason, Dr. Mills urges you to sleep in a position that limits pressure on the re-injection site.
- Follow a healthy diet. It’s important to nourish yourself properly after fat transfer, as doing so can encourage your body to accept the new fat. During your recovery, aim to incorporate plenty of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats into your diet.
- Avoid smoking. In order for fat to survive reinjection, it must form a sturdy connection with your body’s blood supply. Since smoking can disturb this connection (and cause additional complications*), we urge you to stop smoking before and after surgery. (Please also be aware that anything else that can constrict blood supply – even caffeine – has the potential to affect the survival of the fat graft.)
These strategies can dramatically increase the likelihood of long-lasting, satisfying results following your fat transfer procedure. To learn more or schedule a consultation with Dr. Mills, contact Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute today.
