How to Get Rid of Jowls
The appearance of jowls in the lower cheek and jawline areas is a very common and natural effect of the aging process. This accumulation of sagging, inelastic skin can also be exacerbated by weight fluctuations, dietary habits, genetics, smoking, the environment, and other factors. The good news is that signs of jowling can be significantly reduced while creating firmer, more youthful-looking skin and improved contours in these areas.
For most individuals, the most effective way to address jowls is with a facelift procedure. Facelift surgery is specifically designed to address loose skin, wrinkles, and the collagen depletion in the mid- to lower facial area that often contributes to the formation of jowls. Our plastic surgeon, Daniel C. Mills, MD, FACS, typically includes some degree of neck lifting with his facelift procedures, as well; this technique can help improve these lower jawline regions and give the skin a smoother look and more refined contour. Excess skin is trimmed away while the remaining skin is pulled taut, virtually eliminating signs of jowls with long-lasting results.
In cases where jowling is less severe in nature, some patients may benefit from a non-surgical Ultherapy® treatment. This advanced method uses ultrasonic waves to help “lift” the skin and stimulate the growth of collagen, which can ultimately enhance firmness and tightness. While Ultherapy® may not be the best choice for patients with more pronounced jowls, it could be an option in certain circumstances.
