Are Gummy Bear Breast Implants the Best Option Available?
Gummy bear breast implants are the fifth generation of cohesive gel implants, nicknamed for a consistency similar to that of gummy bear candies. Although they were FDA-approved in 2012, Dr. Dan Mills has used gummy bear implants since 2006; in fact, he was part of the FDA trials for gummy bear implants across the country. This innovative type of implants continues to be counted among the most sought-after on the market.
The benefits of gummy bear implants include a potential to cut down on capsular contracture; a more natural look and feel; a lack of silicone gel extravasation in the event of a rupture; and the potential for greater longevity. After comparing these oft-recognized advantages to those of traditional silicone and saline implants, many patients wonder: “Are gummy bear breast implants the best implant option available?”
According to Dr. Mills, the answer is not so cut and dry. In his professional opinion, gummy bear breast implants are an excellent implant option – but only if the patient’s cosmetic goals align with the results these implants are designed to achieve. These cohesive gel implants are made to look more normal than some of the high-profile implants available, so if somebody wants a lot of roundness on top (i.e., a little bit more of a “Baywatch” look), then these implants are probably not for them. Additionally, patients who wish to go much bigger – as well as those who have larger skin envelopes that need to be filled up – are generally not good candidates.
It is also important to note that gummy bear implants are typically more expensive than other implant options, as special considerations need to be taken in regard to their insertion. For example, Dr. Mills prefers to use the TransAxillary SubPectoral Augmentation (TASPA) technique to insert gummy bear implants through the armpit. This method usually takes more time and expertise, therefore increasing the overall cost of care.
Just as one key does not open every door, no one implant is perfect for every patient. There are pros and cons to every breast implant – be it silicone or saline, smooth or textured, high profile or low profile. For this reason, we thoroughly discuss each and every implant option available to patients during the initial breast augmentation consultation.
