Plastic Surgeon in Orange County Responds to FAQs About Breast Implants

Dr. Daniel Mills of the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute answers three questions he hears frequently from women interested in breast augmentation with implants.

Laguna Beach, CA — According to the most recent annual statistics made available by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), breast augmentation was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure performed in 2015. At his practice – the Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute – Orange County plastic surgeon and ASAPS president Daniel Mills, MD says he experienced a similar trend this past year, noting that the breast enhancement procedure continually ranks among his most highly sought aesthetic surgery options.

With the large number of patients seeking breast augmentation, Dr. Mills receives many questions regarding implants, several of which are similar in nature. Three of the most frequently asked questions include:

• What are the differences between saline and silicone implants?
• Is breastfeeding still possible with implants?
• Do breast implants interfere with mammograms?

In response to the first inquiry, the Orange County plastic surgeon states that the composition of the two implant options is a key distinction – saline implants are composed of a saltwater-based solution while silicone implants are filled with a thick silicone gel. Although he says both implant types offer unique advantages and can achieve exceptional results for the right individuals, he explains that cohesive gel (gummy bear) silicone implants tend to be the best option for many patients:

“Having participated in the FDA’s clinical trials for cohesive gel implants, I can attest to the superior aesthetics and variety of benefits these implants have to offer, some of which include a reduced risk of rippling, capsular contracture, leakage, and various other concerns that can compromise the appearance and integrity of implants.”

Regarding breastfeeding following breast augmentation, Dr. Mills states that implants should have no bearing on a patient’s ability to nurse her children when they are placed safely by a board certified plastic surgeon, assuming she was capable of breastfeeding in the first place. For women who still have concerns, however, he notes that certain surgical approaches can be employed to minimize any potential risk of milk gland disruption. “These techniques include inserting the implants through an inframammary or transaxillary (armpit) incision, as well as placing them beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular position),” he writes in a recent blog post.

Lastly, with respect to the possibility of implants interfering with mammograms, Dr. Mills explains that particular screening methods can be utilized to help provide an accurate reading. For example, when implants are positioned below the pectoral muscle, he says the radiologist can employ an “implant displacement” technique during which the the breast tissue is pulled forward while the implant is pushed back along the chest wall. “By doing so,” he states, “four specialized images can be taken in addition to the four normal x-rays, enabling the radiologist to capture a more comprehensive view of breast tissues.” In the event displacement methods do not provide an acceptable reading, Dr. Mills adds that an MRI can often be conducted instead.

Ultimately, the Orange County plastic surgeon stresses that these are simply three of the many questions women should ask before receiving a breast augmentation. By asking questions, doing one’s own research, and becoming fully informed about what to expect before, during, and after surgery, he says patients are much more likely to be fully satisfied with the outcome of their procedure.
