Reducing Skin Inflammation With the Help of… Blackberries!
Black raspberries are rich in ellagic acid, anthocyanins, and antioxidants. Anthocyanins give blackberries their rich, black color and antioxidants help fight free radical damage in the body. Black raspberries have been called the “King of Berries” for their superior health benefits, and it turns out that they may be good for your skin, as well!
A new study published in the journal Nutrients states that eating black raspberries might reduce inflammation associated with skin allergies. In the study, they found that a diet that is high in black raspberries reduced inflammation from contact hypersensitivity, which is a condition that causes redness and inflammation in the skin. In most cases, treatments for contact hypersensitivity are applied directly to the skin, often with topical steroids. In this study, they also found that the black raspberries appear to modulate dendritic cells, which act as messengers to the body’s immune system, telling it to kick in (and essentially create inflammation) or not.
During these particular times, the team here at Aesthetic Plastic Surgical Institute feels this message is beneficial, especially with the need to wear face masks so regularly. Masks can irritate the skin, and while proper skin care can certainly help to alleviate those concerns, our diets can also help tremendously. Remember, healthy skin starts from within! Eat those black raspberries!
